Patriots Targeting Small-School OL

Will Rackley Patriots

Lehigh OL Will Rackley makes a block during Shrine Game practice.

According to Josh Buchanan, the Patriots have a private workout scheduled for Will Rackley (OL, Lehigh) on March 23rd. Rackley (6-3/309) is a prospect that has been flying up draft boards – weighing in at #85 on our latest 2011 NFL Draft Big Board.

Rackley played left tackle at Lehigh, but projects as a guard at the next level. The Patriots have shown a tendency to draft LT’s to convert to guards and right tackles over the last couple of years (Mankins, Kaczur, Vollmer).

Rackley’s athleticism, run-blocking, and intangibles have drawn praise from scouts over the last couple of months. He still gets a bit tight at times, but Coach Scarnecchia would have plenty of talent to work with.

Projections for Rackley place him in the 3rd or 4th round currently.

Rackley looks great to me. I know he played at Lehigh…..but he competed very well at the senior bowl and at the combine (where he pancaked some one in an unpadded drill). He looks mean, competent and from the videos online, well-spoken and humble… Coach…? There are a lot of players in the draft, and teams only have X amount of selections to spend. I dont know our chances of snagging Rackley, but I will say that if and when we draft him, most fans will inevitably be “shocked” and let down for not snagging a big name… However, my guess is that Rackley could evolve into a star–as far as an OLineman can be a star. Take him, we wont have to pay him much, he’ll fit into our system, and in three years, we might have another logan mankins…

Do you know if the team has scheduled anything with Jah Reid from UCF, or if they sent anyone to school pro day?
