The third day of the NFL combine put the defensive line and linebackers out on display. The 2011 defensive line class came out strong, impressing with athleticism, strength and size. It’s a good year for teams with needs along the line, regardless of whether they’re lining up in the 3-4 or 4-3.

2011 NFL Combine Thoughts

Tom Brady NFL Combine

The look of a champion.

Ah, the glorified meat-market that is the NFL Combine. Where hype springs eternal, and common sense goes to die. There will be 4.3′s and 4.5′s. There will be verticals jumped, cones ran, and pads smacked.

After all is said and done though, the most important part of the combine might be done with a tape measure and a voice recorder.

Open Thread: 2011 NFL Draft Sleepers

One of these two players going at it during a Shrine Game practice is one of our top sleepers for the 2011 NFL Draft.

Anyone can look at a prospect like AJ Green or Patrick Peterson and see that they are going to be fine NFL players in the coming years.

Part of the fun of the NFL Draft process is finding those prospects that might have some rough edges that need smoothed out, but still could contribute to an NFL team.

Pitt WR Jonathan Baldwin is one of many NFL Draft prospects looking to make a name for themselves at the upcoming NFL Combine.

Shane Hallam of DraftCountdown.com will be our guest on this edition of NEPD Radio – airing Tuesday night at 6:30pm eastern.

We’ll be discussing the upcoming combine events, as well as getting Shane’s views on some of the top defensive ends, outside linebackers, and offensive linemen. We know that Shane’s 1st 2011 NFL Mock Draft doesn’t come out until after the combine, but we’ll see if we can get him to see where he might be leaning for the Patriots.

Justin Houston shows some 3-4 OLB skills covering a Florida WR.

In the NFL, all linebackers are not created equal. Either through skills or build, some prospects are better suited for the 4-3 and others for the 3-4. Some will play on the left side, while others will line up on the right.

Each of the four linebacker positions in the Patriots defensive scheme has different responsibilities, and general characteristics required to carry out those duties.
