Preseason Meal: New York Giants

Patriots Cheerleaders

After a depressing week of news, hopefully the Patriots can give their fans something to cheer about tonight.

The final week of preseason football is here and only one more gloomy, pigskin-less Monday is in our sights finally. As quickly as August went by, the NFL couldn’t get here soon enough. While the team heads down to Meadowlands Stadium in NJ, let’s take a look at what Patriots fans should keep an eye on during tomorrow’s game.

In one week’s time, the  defense transformed from a youthful, rejuvenated group to something more like a block of Swiss cheese. The largest hole in that brick of dairy used to belong to CB Leigh Bodden, statistically the Patriots best corner in the 2009 regular season with 12 deflected passes and 5 INTs.

It’s going to be a real coming-out party for a young secondary that will be targeted by Eli Manning. Now starting CBs Devin McCourty + Darius Butler will most certainly will have their hands more than full with the likes of Steve Smith, Kevin Boss, Dominique Hixon, and new weapon from UMass Amherst Victor Cruz.

With regard to the ground game, put your hands up if you think that Maroney doesn’t start September 12th…   now put ’em  down. So what if he has only a dozen snaps? He has a vast  knowledge of the system and it would benefit backs like Fred Taylor and BenJarvus Green-Ellis to get more reps. Maroney knows this is the year for him. He will run hard.

ESPNBoston’s Mike Reiss suggests that nine players including Edelman, Cunningham, McGowan, Hernandez, Wheatley, and Brace might not play, which is a bit of a disappointment. Only the Hoodies know whether Tom Brady is going to play or not. Last week was defensively a huge downer, especially after two strong preseason games right out of the gate.

I don’t think it would be too shocking to see Bill run hard and leave the defense to hold their own and get used to life without Bodden. (Man, I cannot express how devastated I was when I realized that Sanchez would never have to stare down #23’s eyes and croak this year).

10 more days and counting…
