When outside-linebacker Derrick Burgess re-signed with New England this may, the Patriots assured themselves of a veteran presence to hold down the OLB fort opposite Tully Banta-Cain until rookie Jermaine Cunningham was able to take over the reigns. Or so they thought.
Ah, training camp. We only had to wait 200 days for your return.
Perhaps the most intriguing portion of training camp each year is the annual gladiatorial battle for a couple of starting spots and a few backups. Young guys trying to make their name, veterans trying to hold on for one more year. This year will be no different, as there will be four highly intriguing positional battles to watch.
According to his agent Andy Simms, Devin McCourty is officially a Patriot. By inking the five-year deal, $13.2 million dollar deal ($7.8m guaranteed) with New England, the former Rutgers cornerback joins an up-and-coming defensive back corps that has seen an injection of youth over the last couple of years.
Brandon Spikes is now the 3rd Florida Gator to sign their rookie contract with the New England Patriots, joining tight-end Aaron Hernandez and DE/OLB Jermaine Cunningham. Spikes signed a 4-year deal reportedly worth $3.21 million dollars. Only 1st-Round draft pick Devin McCourty remains unsigned going into rookie portion of training camp.
