Patriots Host Brandon Graham

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Brandon Graham, the much heralded DE/OLB out of Michigan, made a visit to the New England Patriots’ facilities earlier this month, according to the Scout Network.

The electric Graham wowed scouts and fans alike with his quick first step and solid rush moves at the Senior Bowl. Graham was unblockable at times during the Big 10 season, racking up a couple of sacks against fellow top prospect Bryan Bulaga of Iowa.

Graham projects to be a 3-4 OLB in the Patriots system, but has made visits to 4-3 teams like the Atlanta Falcons as well, where he presumably would play 4-3 DE.

Draft grades vary wildly on the former Wolverine, but all signs point to Graham coming off the board in the middle of the 1st round of the NFL Draft.

Patriots Work out Colt McCoy, Kafka

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

The Patriots brought in two signal callers this week for private workouts: Colt McCoy from Texas and Mike Kafka from Northwestern.

McCoy is fresh off an amazing pro-day and several workouts where he dazzled prospective head-coaches with his accuracy. His size and durability is often questioned, but someone with eyes for the next Drew Brees will give him a chance.

Kafka is a mid-round QB that possesses the skills requisite to be a NFL Starter. Best fit would be a team that needs a solid backup that they can develop.

Look for McCoy to be gone before 40 picks are up, while Kafka will probably last until the 4th round.

Kyle Wilson Will Visit Patriots

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson will visit with the New England Patriots this week, as one of the thirty official visits allowed to each NFL team.

Kyle Wilson took the NFL Draft community by storm with an astounding week at the Senior Bowl, followed by great workouts at the NFL Combine.

Wilson is physical at the line of scrimmage and a willing tackler. He makes plays on the ball and is a threat to take it to the house each time he touches the pigskin.

Look for Wilson to find a home late in the 1st round of the NFL Draft.

Dez Bryant Visits Patriots

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant was a guest in Foxboro this week, ending speculation over whether the Patriots were interested in drafting the highly-touted, yet much-maligned, prospect.

Bryant’s talent on the football field has never been in question, but his odd association with Deion Sanders prompted the NCAA to suspend him for the majority of the 2009 season. Compounding that, there are reports of Bryant being, at best aloof, and at worse uncaring about his offseason workouts. Depending on who you believe, Bryant may have forgot to bring his cleats to his own Pro Day.

With great risk comes great reward. After winning big with Randy Moss, can the Patriots hit on 20 and come up with the ace needed to bring the offense back to the 2007 gold standard? Only Bill knows, and he isn’t telling anyone.

Patriots Worked Out Antonio Coleman

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

According to Christopher Price, the Patriots held a private workout with Auburn defensive end Antonio Coleman.

As it stands, Coleman is a highly talented player that is lacking a position. His 6-1/250 frame is likely too small to play DE, but he lacks the ideal athleticism to play in space at the OLB position. That said, 9 sacks and 15+ TFL is nothing to sneeze at.

2010 Patriots NFL Mock Draft

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

We’ve done a 2010 NFL Mock Draft and a Patriots Dream Draft. Here is our (mostly) unbiased prediction for who the Patriots select during the 2010 NFL Draft.

Round 1: Pick 22
Maurkice Pouncey, OL, Florida
Jared Odrick or Rolando McClain would be ideal, but it looks like both will be long gone by the time the Patriots are on the clock. Pouncey is a big center, which is becoming a must in a division that features so many huge nose tackles. The former Florida Gator has some versatility as well, with the ability to fill both guard spots if the need arises.

Round 2: Pick 44
Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB, TCU
The Patriots might need to move up a little to grab this talented Horned Frog, but he will be well worth the price. He’s a couple of inches shorter than Belichick’s prototypical outside linebacker, but his athleticism allows him to play bigger. Should be able to upgrade the position Derrick Burgess filled in 2009 immediately.

Round 2: Pick 47
Dennis Pitta, TE, BYU
Pitta is exactly what the Patriots need on offense. He runs precise routes and catches everything thrown near him. Not a great blocker, but Alge Crumpler is on board to fill that role. Tony Moeaki, Aaron Hernandez, and Rob Gronkowski are all other options that the Patriots might explore at the Tight End position.

Round 2: Pick 53
Tyson Alualu, DE, California
Alualu is built like a tree trunk. He is tough to move at the point of attack and has the versatility to play the 3-tech and the 5-tech. Shows a great motor on tape and loves to play the game.

Round 4:
Emmanuel Sanders, WR, SMU
Very intriguing prospect that has the explosiveness needed to be a great #2 receiver in the NFL. Incredible combine performance caught the attention of many a NFL scout. Still needs some polish, but has tons of upside.

Round 5:
Deji Karim, RB, Southern Illinois
I see the Patriots packaging their 6th round pick and their two 7th round picks to move into the 5th round and select this talented runner. Karim has the ability to fill in for Kevin Faulk at 3rd-down back right away.

Round 6: (Comp)
John Skelton, QB, Fordham

Round 7: (Comp)
Mike Brandtner, P, Iowa State

Round 7: (Comp)
Mike McLaughlin, LB, Boston College

Round 7: (Comp)
Jameson Konz, ATH, Kent State
