Bears and Patriots Talking Trade?

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

As we reported on early in March, there was some speculation regarding a potential Greg Olsen (TE, Bears) to the Patriots deal. Bear Goggles, a cleverly-named Bears fansite, is reporting that the talk is heating back up.

They (rightly) acknowledge that the Bears would have to package someone or something with Olsen in order to procure one of the Patriots’ 2nd-round draft picks. Bill Belichick himself stated that teams have already been calling about the three picks that the Patriots have stockpiled. We think Olsen and the Bears 3rd round pick would get the job done.

While I’m certain that Coach Belichick is listening to any offers on the table, don’t expect the Patriots to overpay for a receiving tight end, especially with so many options available in the mid-rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft. We see Greg Olsen playing in the windy city again in 2010.

Dekoda Watson Worked Out With Patriots

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

According to the NFP, the Patriots have held a private workout with speedy linebacker Dekoda Watson.

Watson, who only weighs 226 pounds, might be looked at as a S/LB hybrid player in the Patriots defense. He wouldn’t be a good fit at either true 3-4 LB position.

Watson has consistently run in the 4.4 range this spring, displaying incredible athleticism.

Patriots Work Out TE Nate Byham

Friday, April 16th, 2010

The Patriots held a private workout with Pittsburgh tight end Nate Byham earlier this month. The best blocking TE in the draft, Byham has a big frame (6-4/270) that he uses to open up holes in the run game.

Byham is no Antonio Gates, but he can catch the ball. He totaled 2 touchdowns his senior season to along with over 250 yards in receiving.

Byham is regarded as a 3rd day selection in the 2010 NFL Draft. The Patriots currently have a large need at the TE position, with Alge Crumpler as the only viable starter.

Patriots Draft Trends

Friday, April 16th, 2010

With four picks in the first two rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft, Patriot fans are desperately trying to figure out in what direction Bill Belichick and company are leaning, position-wise.

We’re going to take a look at the trends to see what positions the Patriots have favored over the last decade in the first three rounds.

Offense – 13 picks
RB – 1 time (Maroney ’06)
WR – 4 times (Tate ’09, Jackson ’06, Johnson ’03, Branch ’02)
TE – 3 times (Thomas ’06, Watson ’04, Graham ’02)
OL – 4 times (Vollmer, ’09, Mankins ’05, Kaczur ’05, Light ’01)
QB – 1 time (O’Connell, ’08)

Defense – 17 picks
DL – 5 times (Brace ’09, Wilfork ’04, Hill ’04, Warren ’03, Seymour ’01)
LB – 3 times (McKenzie ’09, Mayo ’08, Crable ’08)
DB – 8 times (Chung ’09, Butler ’09, Wheatley ’08, Meriweather ’07, Hobbs ’05, Scott ’04, Wilson ’03, Williams ’01)

What conclusions can be drawn?

1. The Patriots will probably draft a defensive back somewhere in the first three rounds of the draft. There is already some good depth at the position, but save for the top two on the depth chart (Butler, Bodden), nobody should feel too secure in their job for 2010.

2. We won’t be shocked if the Patriots draft Tim Tebow. The drafting of Kevin O’Connell and Rohan Davey (4th round ’02) show that the Patriots don’t mind spending a high pick to improve parts of their team where they are already set.

3. The Patriots will take at least one offensive and one defensive player. After 30 picks in the first three rounds, the results are pretty evenly split from an offense/defense standpoint. Only once in the last decade (excluding years with only one top pick) did the Patriots spend all of their top picks on one side of the ball, the ill-fated 2006 NFL Draft where they took Maroney, Chad Jackson, and David Thomas.

Jason Worilds Visits Patriots

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Virginia Tech DE/OLB Jason Worilds visited the Patriots today, perhaps marking the last official visit of the NFL Draft season. Teams are not allowed to hold official visits within seven days of the draft.

Worilds’ talent is rarely questioned, as he is truly a disruptive force on the field. His injury concerns, especially a bum shoulder, are cause to worry.

Coach Belichick has stated that most official visits are for medical reasons, and I’m sure this one was no different.

If found to be 100% healthy, Worilds could be a solid 2nd Round pick for a team neading a conversion project at the 3-4 OLB position.

Dolphins, Jets: “Your Move Patriots”

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

With the recent acquisitions of Santonio Holmes by the New York Jets and Brandon Marshall by the Miami Dolphins, the degree of difficulty in the AFC East has certainly been increased. Add to that the fact that, respectively, a 5th rounder and two 2nd rounders were all it took, and you have some alarm bells ringing in Patriot fans heads across the nation.

While many pundits and fans alike will point out that both teams have brought in other teams off-field problems, I’d remind you that the game is played on the field. Their locker rooms haven’t gotten any better, but all it takes is a year of chemistry, and even Terrell Owens is capable of that.

What does this mean for the Patriots? Don’t expect Coach Belichick to be sated by just the signing of Leigh Bodden. He needs three cornerbacks of his caliber now, and while Darius Butler and Bodden have certainly shown the ability, the triumvirate of Shawn Springs, Terrence Wheatley, and Jonathan Wilhite has been incredibly underwhelming. Joe Haden, Devin McCourty, Amari Spievey, and Kyle Wilson are the four guys in the draft that I can see the Patriots targeting at the CB position.

Another consideration is that the Patriots will have arguably the 3rd best WR corps to start the 2010 NFL Season… in the AFC East. Julian Edelman will do his best to replace Wes Welker, but the Patriots have struggled since Jabar Gaffney left to find a legitimate #2 WR to play opposite Randy Moss. Mardy Gilyard, Demaryius Thomas, and Dez Bryant, are three guys in the NFL Draft that I feel could step in right away to that position, while our own Brandon Tate will be in the mix as well.

The Jets and Dolphins have made their moves, come back during the 2010 NFL Draft to see how the Patriots made theirs.
