2010 NFL Draft: Day Two Trade Options

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

I’m sure that you will see Coach Belichick on the phone even more tonight. With the Patriots being one of the power brokers in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, they hold picks 44, 47, 53, and 90, expect a lot of movement up and down the board tonight. Let’s see who we may be dealing with.

Oakland:
The Raiders hold picks 39 and 69 tonight. If there someone on the board that Coach Belichick wants, he may leapfrog the Dolphins at 40 to get the job done. Picks 47 and 53 might be enough to get picks 39 and 69 from Al Davis.

Chiefs:
Kansas City has tons of needs. The hold picks 36, 50, and 68 tonight. At the 36th selection, the Patriots would be guaranteed to get either the reportedly injured Sergio Kindle, Linval Joseph, Golden Tate, Arrelious Benn, or Ricky Sapp. A 4th round pick (113), plus maybe a swap of later picks, might be all that is needed to get there from 44.

Let us know what trades you think might go down.

2010 NFL Draft: Day Two Targets

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

After shoring up the defensive secondary by picking Rutgers cornerback Devin McCourty, the Patriots have some needs to address on both sides of the ball tomorrow.

Here is who we see them targeting:

Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas
The Patriots will probably have to trade up from the #44 spot to land Kindle, but his pass-rush skills are greatly needed in Foxboro.

Ricky Sapp, OLB, Clemson
As with Kindle, Sapp brings some much needed pass-rush ability to the table. Unlike Kindle, however, Sapp could be there for us at pick #44.

Brian Price, DE, UCLA / Everson Griffen, DE, USC / Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida
Two guys from LA  and a Gator with similar problems: taking plays off and questions about position fit. Not sure Price can dominate in the 5-tech, and not sure Griffen can play 3-4 OLB. Dunlap has off the field issues and loafing problems. That said, they are incredibly talented athletes.

Linval Joseph, DL, East Carolina
Joseph is a guy that can stop the run, whether he plays the 5-tech, 3-tech, or nose. Very strong at the POA.

Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
To select Tate, the Patriots might have to trade up to pick #33 with the St. Louis Rams. If they can pull it off though, Tate is an explosive receiver that can instantly upgrade the WR position opposite Randy Moss.

Dexter McCluster, RB, Ole Miss
Kevin Faulk 2.0 is an incredible football player, that just happens to be pretty tiny. If the Patriots feel like he can hold up, his versatility and elusiveness is top-notch.

Marcus Easley, WR, UConn / Andre Roberts, WR, Citadel / Mardy Gilyard, WR, Cinci

If the Patriots can’t get Golden Tate, either of these wideouts would provide some good value in the 3rd round. Both are absolutely fearless over the middle.

Koa Misi, DE, Utah / AJ Edds, OLB, Iowa
Both are very versatile guys, with Misi being able to play DE, OLB, and we feel SILB for the Patriots. Edds is a guy that can really cover, but will have to fit at either the MIKE or WILL to get picked.

2010 NFL Draft: With the 27th Pick…

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

With the 27th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft the Patriots have selected Rutgers cornerback Devin McCourty. McCourty is a very physical corner with great ball and return skills.

McCourty will compete with Darius Butler, a 2nd round pick in 2009, for the starting CB spot opposite Leigh Bodden, although a 3rd CB is nearly a starter against many NFL Teams.

After twice trading back, with the Broncos and Cowboys, the Patriots ended up swapping 4th rounders (#119 to #113) and gaining a 3rd rounder (#90). Coach Bill Belichick stated that the Patriots would have picked McCourty if they would have stayded at the 22nd pick. The Patriots passed on DE/OLB conversion projects and fan favorites Sergio Kindle and Jerry Hughes.
