With the way things are going in the tight end department for the Patriots, the Butcher and Candlestick Maker better watch out. The Baker, veteran-TE Chris Baker in this case, just got sent packing, saving the Patriots nearly $2M in, well, dough.
This, along with Ben Watson’s imminent departure, leaves the Patriots with exactly zero TE’s on the current roster, although there is some speculation surrounding some veterans in free-agency and the trade market.
Greg Olsen is getting the most play, as the Bears are reported to be shopping him for a 2nd-round pick. The Patriots have three of those in the upcoming 2010 NFL Draft.
Other potential NFL Draft targets for the Patriots could be Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma, Tony Moeaki of Iowa, Garrett Graham of Wisconsin, and Colin Peek of Alabama. All of the aforementioned tight ends are able to block as well as catch the ball, eliminating some of the receiving TE’s in the draft.
