Watch Out Butcher and Candlestick Maker

Friday, March 5th, 2010

With the way things are going in the tight end department for the Patriots, the Butcher and Candlestick Maker better watch out. The Baker, veteran-TE Chris Baker in this case, just got sent packing, saving the Patriots nearly $2M in, well, dough.

This, along with Ben Watson’s imminent departure, leaves the Patriots with exactly zero TE’s on the current roster, although there is some speculation surrounding some veterans in free-agency and the trade market.

Greg Olsen is getting the most play, as the Bears are reported to be shopping him for a 2nd-round pick. The Patriots have three of those in the upcoming 2010 NFL Draft.

Other potential NFL Draft targets for the Patriots could be Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma, Tony Moeaki of Iowa, Garrett Graham of Wisconsin, and Colin Peek of Alabama. All of the aforementioned tight ends are able to block as well as catch the ball, eliminating some of the receiving TE’s in the draft.

Patriots 2010 Compensatory Picks

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

We project the Patriots to receive four compensatory picks for the 2010 NFL Draft. These compensatory picks are awarded when a player is lost to free-agency and signs a qualifying contract with another team. A compensatory pick can be lost by signing a qualifying player in free-agency as well.

Projected 2010 Compensatory Picks:

7th Round: Jabar Gaffney (small possibility of a 6th rounder)
7th Round: Heath Evans
7th Round: Lonnie Paxton
7th Round: Lamont Jordan

These picks are awarded at the end of the round and cannot be traded.

Patriots Draft Mockumentrary: 3/2/2010

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Each Tuesday, we’ll be looking at five NFL Mock Drafts, including our own. We’ll decide who wins, who fails, and who falls in between. Make sure you let us know what you think.

Today we’re looking at the 2010 NFL Mock Drafts from The Football Hub, Draft Season, Inside the Eagles, NFL Draft Dog, and our very own 2010 NFL Mock Draft.

1st Round – 22nd Overall
Football Hub – Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas
Draft Season – Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
Inside The Eagles – Carlos Dunlap, DE/OLB, Florida
NFL Draft Dog – Jahvid Best, RB, California
NE Patriots Draft – Carlos Dunlap, DE/OLB, Florida

Three sites agree that the Patriots need to address the pass rush via the DE/OLB hybrid position. Dunlap and Kindle both have some warts, Dunlap having attitude issues on and off the field, while Kindle has some size/strength issues. Each though brings some dynamic talent to the table, with Dunlap possessing the ideal size that Coach Belichick looks for in a 3-4 rush OLB.

Gresham and Best also are intriguing selections for the Patriots. Gresham has all the receiving skills that he needs for the NFL, but his blocking isn’t up to par with the rest of his game. If injuries aren’t looked at, Jahvid Best is a top-10 talent. That said, his concussion problems, along with some pass-protection issues, will weigh heavily on teams minds.

At this point, I’d be happy with any of these players being the Patriots first selection, but would rather trade down and select Kindle or Gresham later in the 1st – I think they might still be there.

Patriots Free-Agency Targets

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

On March 5th, the Patriots and the other 31 NFL teams will be able to finally begin their annual feeding frenzy, commonly called Free Agency, gobbling up any NFL starts that teams were unable to lock down under long-term deals or franchise tags. Check out the Patriots team needs and then read here for who fits those needs.

Unrestricted Free-Agent Targets:
Karlos Dansby, LB, Cardinals- Dansby would be an ideal SILB for the Patriots, although he has many potential suitors. He will command a very large deal.
Update: Will sign with Dolphins

Julius Peppers, DE, Panthers- You can’t question his athleticism. You can question the ability of a 30 year old to convert to OLB. Might not be worth the money and risk.
Update: Will sign with Bears

Aaron Kampmann, DE/OLB, Packers- Age and injuries have taken their toll on Kampmann, but he is exactly what the Patriots need: a hard-nosed leader that loves to compete. He still has some in the gas tank.
Update: Will sign with Jaguars

Josh Reed, WR, Bills / Derrick Mason, WR, Ravens – Two 2nd-tier WR’s that would help bridge the gap until Wes Welker can come back. The elusive 3rd target that we needed last year.

Alge Crumpler, TE, Titans- Not much of a pass-catcher anymore, but still knows how to block. Would be great paired with a TE in the NFL Draft.

Restricted Free-Agent Targets
Vincent Jackson, WR, Chargers- Downfield threat who could be a long-term replacement for Randy Moss. Very physical.

Owen Daniels, TE, Houston- Tony Scheffler of the Broncos would be here too, but “The Code” won’t allow that. Daniels is a very talented TE that would be a huge threat in the Patriots offense.

Leon Washington, RB, Jets- 3rd-down back that would fill in admirably for Kevin Faulk if the Patriots choose to go another way.

Richard Marshall, CB, Panthers- We’ve coveted Marshall since he was drafted out of Fresno State. Would be a great pickup if we can’t re-sign Leigh Bodden, or even if we do.

Marshall Yanda, OG, Ravens- Technically sound inside lineman that packs a punch in the run game. Can also play some RT when needed.

Shawne Merriman, OLB, Chargers- His game isnt’ what it used to be, but he still can pressure the quarterback. Do the Patriots really want the headache though?

Matt Roth, DE/OLB, Cleveland- Didn’t fit in Miami, but has the desire that Bill Belichick loves. Absolutely won’t quit – has an insane motor.

Chris Gocong, DE/OLB, Eagles- Good player, poor scheme. Gocong should shine for a 3-4 team as a rush end.
