Patriots to Workout LSU’s Al Woods

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

One day after they will have a private workout with Iowa TE Tony Moeaki, the Patriots will be in Tiger Country to work out LSU defensive lineman Al Woods.

Woods never lived up to his potential in Baton Rouge, but has the physical gifts that could translate to playing nose tackle or the 5-technique in the Patriots defense. At 6-3/310, he moves well and has a wingspan for days.

Other defensive-line prospects for the Patriots in the 2010 NFL Draft would be Jared Odrick from Penn State and Dan Williams from Tennessee.

Kevin Faulk Still a Patriot

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

The Patriots and Kevin Faulk have agreed to contract terms, according to multiple reports. Entering his 13th year, Faulk is still an invaluable leader and contributor running and catching the ball. Faulk had over 600 all-purpose yards in 2009 and scored 3 touchdowns.

Faulk should now be able to retire a Patriot. Contract details have yet to be released.

Ryan Mathews Visiting Foxboro

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews will be visiting the facilities at Patriot Place in the coming days. Kurt Coleman of OSU is the only other confirmed player to visit the Patriots so far for the 2010 NFL Draft.

Ryan Matthews had an impressive junior season, backed up by great performances at the NFL Combine. He is an effective inside runner as well as having the breakaway speed to get to the edge.

Matthews is pretty raw in the passing game, needing to shore up his blocking/route-running. That said, Matthews is a top-notch prospect that could easily be off the board in the late 1st round of the NFL Draft.

Patriots Draft Mockumentrary: 3/9/2010

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Each Tuesday, we’ll be looking at five NFL Mock Drafts, including our own. We’ll decide who wins, who fails, and who falls in between. Make sure you let us know what you think.

This week we are looking at the mock drafts from Walter Football, Pats Draft, Great Blue North Report, Sideline Scouting and our very own NFL Mock Draft.

Walter Football: Jared Odrick, DE/DT, Penn State
Pats Draft: Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan
Great Blue North Report: Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan
Sideline Scouting: Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
NE Patriots Draft: Jared Odrick, DE/DT, Penn State

Analysis:
All five mock drafts are in agreement that the Patriots need to upgrade the defensive end position. Morgan and Graham are more pure pass-rushers, while Odrick has a little more to give against the run.

While Morgan doesn’t seem to have the hips to play 3-4 OLB, nor the strength to play 3-4 DE, Graham and Odrick are both versatile enough to play multiple positions in the Patriots 3-4 defense.

Patriots to Workout Tony Moeaki

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

We’ve learned that the Patriots have scheduled a private workout with Iowa tight-end Tony Moeaki, who we interviewed earlier this year. The workout is scheduled for March 15th, and the Patriots will also reportedly attend his pro-day the next week.

Moeaki, along with Rob Gronkowski of Arizona and Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma, are three of the more “complete” tight-ends in the 2010 NFL Draft, something the Patriots are sorely lacking after cutting ties. After cutting ties with Chris Baker, the Patriots have zero TE’s on their roster.

Patriots Resign Leigh Bodden

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Leigh Bodden’s signature on a Patriots contract will mark the end to an odd few days. After spending over a day in Houston being wooed by the Texans front office and coaching staff, it seemed that the veteran CB was slipping through the Patriots fingers. Bill Belichick and the rest of the Patriots brass were obviously able to match whatever the Texans were bringing to the table.

Bodden’s deal is for 4 years, worth $22 million dollars. $10m is guaranteed.

Bodden led the Patriots with five interceptions, returning one of them for a touchdown. His strong play in run support, sure tackling, and tight coverage were all factors that led to the Patriots bringing him back.
