Patriots Schedule Workout with Jerry Hughes

Friday, March 26th, 2010

The Patriots have scheduled a private workout with TCU Horned Frog defensive end Jerry Hughes. The workout will take place in Foxboro this Monday.

Hughes projects to a rush-end in the 4-3 or a 3-4 outside linebacker. Hughes is still transitioning to the defensive side of the ball after playing running back, but his explosiveness and athleticism has eased the acclimation. Most scouts project Hughes as a late first or early second round selection in the upcoming 2010 NFL Draft.

Patriots Hold Workout with Emmanuel Sanders

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

We’ve learned that the Patriots held a private workout with SMU Mustang wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders yesterday. QB Coach Bill O’Brien was reportedly in attendance.

Sanders made a splash at the Senior Bowl, showing explosive speed and sure hands. He later ran a 4.41 at the combine, also sporting a 6.6 3-cone and showing off a 39.5″ vertical jump.

Patriots Draft Mockumentary: 3/23/10

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Each Tuesday, we’ll be looking at five NFL Mock Drafts, including our own. We’ll decide who wins, who fails, and who falls in between. Make sure you let us know what you think.

Today we’ll be looking at Walter Football, Draft Daddy, Draft King, Draft Countdown, and our very own 2010 NFL Mock Draft.

1st Round
Walter: Jared Odrick
Daddy: Jared Odrick
King: Brandon Graham
Countdown: Jared Odrick
NE Patriots Draft: Jared Odrick

Analysis: Jared Odrick, DL from Penn State, is certainly the chalk pick for the Patriots at this point. A penetrating defender with the ability to play the 5-tech and size to boot will be hard for Belichick to pass up.

2nd Round
Walter: Roger Saffold, Tim Tebow, Aaron Hernandez
Daddy: No selections
King: No selections
Countdown: Jermaine Gresham, Ricky Sapp, Mardy Gilyard
NE Patriots Draft: Aaron Hernandez, Demaryius Thomas, Ricky Sapp

Analysis: Draft Countdown and I certainly agree that TE/WR/OLB are positions that could use an upgrade. Gresham and Gilyard versus Thomas and Hernandez would be a great debate — the latter having a higher ceiling, with the former having a higher floor. While we like the versatility that Saffold would bring to the OL, we’re not in the Tebow camp quite yet.

Iowa Pro Day Results

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

One of the more impressive Pro Days of the year so far was held today in Iowa City, and the best Hawkeye prospect won’t even participate until next year. (DL, Adrian Clayborn)

Offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga had a good day in positional drills and had 27 bench reps, but the star of the day was tight-end Tony Moeaki. Moeaki cut almost a full tenth off his combine 40-yard dash, lowering it to 4.62. He also had a 6.98 3-cone drill and 36.5 inches.

CB Amari Spievey might have improved on his combine 40 time(4.51), depending on who you ask. We’ve heard reports anywhere from 4.47 and 4.57.

The Iowa linebackers, Pat Angerer and AJ Edds (shown chasing down Jonathan Dwyer above), both improved their 40 times, running identical 4.63 times. Angerer showed off a 39.5″ vertical, while Edds went for 36.5 inches.

Patriots Receive Four Compensatory Draft Picks

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

As expected, the New England Patriots received one 6th round (#205) and three 7th round (#247, #248, #250) compensatory draft picks in the upcoming 2010 NFL Draft. This gives the Patriots 12 Draft Picks in total.

Compensatory picks are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. A team losing more or better players than it acquires is eligible. Teams are not allowed to trade compensatory picks.

The players that the Patriots lost were Jabar Gaffney, Heath Evans, Lonnie Paxton, and Lamont Jordan.

Patriots Will Work Out Jeff Owens

Friday, March 19th, 2010

NE Patriots Draft has learned that the Patriots will hold a private workout with Georgia DT Jeff Owens next Friday.

Owens impressed scouts lately with his solid showing at the Georgia Pro Day. Owens was clocked at 4.9 in the 40-yard dash, and benched 225 pounds an amazing 44 times.

Owens is a double-team eater that isn’t really known for his pass rush skills. His stocky build (6-1/305) could allow him to be used as a rotational NT behind Vince Wilfork.
