Patriots Looking to Trade Up?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

According to SFGate.com, an “unnamed team” is interested in dealing for the #8 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, which belongs to the Oakland Raiders. The “mystery” team is reportedly offering a 2011 1st Round Pick and a 2nd rounder in 2010.

While this easily could be the Eagles or some other team, just think for a minute – which team already has an extra 1st round draft pick next year, and three 2nd round selections in 2010? Well that would be the Patriots of course, and it just so happens that they own Oakland’s 1st rounder in 2011.

If it is the Patriots eying the 8th pick in the NFL Draft, which is a BIG if, who might they be targeting? Rolando McClain (LB, Alabama), Joe Haden (CB, Florida), as well as any number of the talented O-linemen in this year’s class immediately come to mind. Clemson RB CJ Spiller as well as DE’s Jason Pierre-Paul and Derrick Morgan would also probably be in the conversation.

Patriot fans are always concerned when Belichick trades down… it will be very interesting to see what they think if he should trade up.

Patriots Brass Break Bread with Tebow

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

According to multiple reports, Patriots VP Nick Caserio and head coach Bill Belichick were wining and dining Tim Tebow, with the Florida QB spending almost two days in the area.

If the Patriots aren’t actually interested in drafting Tebow, they are doing a masterful job of pretending that they are. It is still unclear whether Belichick would be grooming Tebow to replace Tom Brady, or if Bill has alternative plans for Urban Meyer’s boy.

Patriots Hold Workout with Chris Cook

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

The New England Patriots held a private workout last week with Virginia CB/S Chris Cook, according to the NFP.

Cook’s size (6-2/212) and ability to play more than one position in the defensive backfield will surely endear him to a Patriots staff that values versatility.

Cook has enjoyed a nice ride up the draft boards this Spring after a strong post-season, including a 4.46 time at the combine.

Patriots Work Out Wootton, McMannis

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

The Patriots held a private workout with two Northwestern Wildcats yesterday: DE Corey Wootton and CB Sherrick McMannis.

Wootton projects to a wide variety of positions in the NFL, including the 4/5 technique and OLB. McMannis is a solid cornerback with good instincts.

Wootton is projected to be a 2nd/3rd round pick, while McMannis will be drafted in the middle to late rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Patriots to Host Dan Williams

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Tennessee defensive lineman Dan Williams will make a visit to Foxboro sometime next week, according to Albert Breer. Volunteer teammate Montario Hardesty will also make a visit.

Williams projects to the 3-4 nose tackle position, although he occasionally gets pushed back by double teams. At 6-3/327, Williams possesses great athleticism, running a 5.1 forty and showing off a 32″ vertical.

Williams would either provide a backup to Patriot veteran Vince Wilfork, or let Wilfork shift outside to the 5-technique.

Cam Thomas to Visit Patriots

Monday, March 29th, 2010

UPDATE: According to Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston, no visit has been scheduled.

North Carolina nose tackle Cam Thomas will make an official visit to the Patriots facilities sometime in the next few days.

Thomas is a 6-4/330 brute that could easily play the nose or the 5-technique in a 3-4, giving the Patriots a run-stopping force. His motor doesn’t run too long, so he would have to be subbed off in obvious passing downs.

If the Patriots aren’t too enamored with now 2nd-year player Ron Brace, look for Cam Thomas to get a serious look on NFL Draft day.
