Travelle Gaines: The Combine Whisperer

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Performance Gaines, a performance training company founded by Travelle Gaines, has a simple motto: Rise To The Challenge. Each year, Gaines has a score or so of potential NFL Draft picks descend to his training area. Each comes with a similar motto: Rise To The Top (of the NFL Draft).

Each year, his clients perform at or near the top of their positional groupings at the NFL Combine. His clients this year include Stafon Johnson, Dominique Franks, Ed Dickson, Perrish Cox, Brian Price, Ryan Matthews, and Reshad Jones.

Travelle was kind enough to chat with a bit about what it takes to get someone ready for the NFL Combine.

How long have you been training NFL Football Players?
Four years. (Editor’s note: Travelle is a Louisiana native that attended San Jose State university before working with the LSU Tigers and Jacksonville Jaguars)

When getting players ready for the NFL Combine, do you ever try and make the cross-over to game-related skills, or is it 100% combine based?
Game related skills.

When an athlete like Chris Johnson or Reggie Bush, both clients of yours, walks in that door, do you ever wonder to yourself, “How am I going to make HIM better?”
No, because there is a plan of action for every athlete that walks in the door. Everyone can always get better.

What event is your specialty — where do your clients see the most growth?
I think I have improvement in growth in all categories. It really goes on a player by player basis.

What are a few of the specific drills or workouts that you employ to take a guy from 4.6 to 4.4?
We have them do over speed training to help with their stride frequency and sprints over mini hurdles to help with their stride length.

The forty-yard dash gets all the press, but what event at the combine do you feel is the truest test of a player’s athleticism?
The 3 cone drill because it displays a player’s athleticism by showing their linear and change of direction speed.

Any combine predictions for your clients this year?
Ryan Matthews, Reshad Jones and Brian Price will have a really great combine.

What sort of advice do you have for the arm-chair scouts out there – what should they be noticing during the NFL Combine drills?
The arm-chair scouts should be noticing the “diamond in the rough” type kids. They should notice they kids that test well across the board.

Patriots Draft Mockumentary: 2/23/10

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Each Tuesday, we’ll be looking at five NFL Mock Drafts, including our own. We’ll decide who wins, who fails, and who falls in between. Make sure you let us know what you think.

Today we’ll be looking at NFLDraftUpdates.com, Sunday Kickoff, Draft Countdown, Walter Football and our very own 2010 NFL Mock Draft.

Pick 22:
NFL Draft Updates: CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson
Sunday Kickoff: Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
Draft Countdown: Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
Walter Football: Jared Odrick, DL, Penn State
NE Patriots Draft: Dan Williams, NT, Tennessee

I can’t see the Patriots going offense on their first pick, especially not Tim Tebow or a tight end. CJ Spiller might be tempting though. Walter Football is on to something with Odrick.

Pick 42:
NFL Draft Updates: Corey Wootten, DL, Northwestern
Sunday Kickoff: Corey Wootten, DL, Northwestern
Draft Countdown: Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech
Walter Football: Eric Norwood, DE/LB, South Carolina
NE Patriots Draft: Jerry Hughes, DE/LB, TCU

Draft Countdown again thinks that the Patriots don’t need help on defense, while everyone else seems to agree that the defensive line and pass rush need an upgrade.

Pick 48:
NFL Draft Updates: Maurkice Pouncey, OG/C, Florida
Sunday Kickoff: Jahvid Best, RB, California
Draft Countdown: Koa Misi, DE/LB, Utah
Walter Football: Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
NE Patriots Draft: Maurkice Pouncey, OG/C, Florida

Offense seems to be the consensus here, with Lord Tebow making another appearance, along with a RB and an OG/C. Misi finally is a good pick from Draft Countdown for the Patriots.

Pick 53:
NFL Draft Updates: Ricky Sapp, DE/LB, Clemson
Sunday Kickoff: Perrish Cox, CB, Oklahoma State
Draft Countdown: Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida
Walter Football: Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida
NE Patriots Draft: Mardy Gilyard, WR, Cincinnati

We love all of these picks, although we’d rather have Amari Spievey or Devin McCourty than Perrish Cox. Hernandez and Gilyard would provide Tom Brady with another receiving threat, while Sapp would be a great value at this position in the draft.

Tag: You’re it

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Not surprisingly, the Patriots slapped Vince Wilfork with non-exclusive Franchise Tag today. The Patriots had this to say in their press release:

“A long-term agreement with Vince Wilfork has been the team’s top contractual priority for some time. Unfortunately, despite numerous conversations and proposals, the goal has not yet been realized.

“Vince is a tremendous player for our team and remains a significant part of our future plans. It is because of Vince’s importance to this organization that we have assigned the franchise designation as we continue to work toward a long-term agreement. We are hopeful that Vince will remain a Patriot for many years to come.”

As always, Vince’s family was incredibly respectful and understanding of the nature of the NFL. Bianca, Vince’s wife, had this to say on her Twitter account:

In regards to the many calls and emails i am receiving in response to the franchise tag we figured this would be the easiest way to (address this) …

“The franchise tag has been applied. After six years of dedicated service i do understand this is a business …

“With that being said it is my hope that the tag is applied for its true purpose …

“For the purpose of allotting more time for us to continue our talks and be able to reach a long term agreement. …”

“Only time will tell what the final result will be.

Hopefully a long-term deal will be consummated soon and Vince Wilfork can heal up and dominate the trenches for another 4-5 years.
