NFL Draft Homework: Meineke Car Care Bowl

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Pittsburgh vs North Carolina, December 26th, 4:30pm, ESPN

Top NFL Draft Prospects for the Meineke Car Care Bowl

1. Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina (Pictured)
Austin rates as a late-first or second round prospect currently. He is an athletic tackle that can play the run while still applying pressure to the quarterback. We currently have Austin going #64 to New Orleans in our 2010 NFL Mock Draft.

2. Greg Romeus, DE/OLB, Pittsburgh
Excellent pass-rusher that often gets double-teamed. Not sure if he has fluid enough hips to play in space at the next level. Should go in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft, we have him at #56 in our 2010 NFL Mock Draft.

3. Bruce Carter, OLB, North Carolina

4. Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina
You won’t be able to draft these guys until 2011 at earliest, but they are worth the wait. Explosive defenders that are instant game-changers, look for Quinn to be a top-15 pick in 2011, and Carter to also be a 1st Rounder. Both appear in our 2011 NFL Mock Draft.

Marshall vs Ohio, December 26th, 1pm, ESPN

Top NFL Draft Prospects for the Little Caesars Bowl

1. Taylor Price, Senior WR, Ohio (Pictured)
Price can disappear at times in the offense, but when he gets into the game, watch out. The all-time Bobcat receiver should be drafted in the 5th-6th round.

2. Mario Harvey, Junior LB, Marshall
Hard-hitting backer with 5 sacks on the season who has led the Herd in tackles each of the last two years. A late-round pick at this point.

Nevada vs SMU, December 24th, 9:00pm, ESPN

Top NFL Draft Prospects for the Hawaii Bowl

1. Colin Kaepernick, Junior QB, Nevada (Pictured)

A big frame (6-6/215) compliments a decent arm, but Colin’s legs are what gets him noticed. Could be a QB/WR in the NFL, look for him to be drafted in the 4th-6th rounds.

2. Kevin Basped, Junior DE, Nevada
A small DE, weighing in at 240 pounds, will try and be a Dumervil/Mathis type edge rusher. Should get drafted in the 4th-6th rounds.

3. Emmanuel Sanders, Senior WR, SMU
Has some personal red-flags, but is a speedster that can make big plays. The red flags might preclude him from being drafted, but he will either be a 7th-rounder or a highly sought-after UDFA.

2010 Dream Patriots Draft

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Updated 4/15/10

While winning seasons, playoff runs, and NFL records are nice to see, a Lombardi trophy is what every Patriot fan and player is striving for each year. The Patriots will need to have a great off-season in 2010 to key up for a Superbowl run in the next decade. So we here at NE Patriots Draft are going to piece together what the Patriots need to do this spring.

Let’s get on to our dream scenario… also check out the Patriots 2010 Draft Picks page.

Round 1: 22nd Overall
Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama
We might as well dream big. If the McClain makes it to pick #10, expect the Patriots to explore moving up and grabbing Nick Saban’s boy. McClain at SILB would allow Jerod Mayo to move to a more natural WILB.

Round 2: 44th Overall
Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB, TCU
Hughes is an incredibly gifted athlete that is still learning the defensive side of the ball. He has the natural ability to play 3-4 OLB, 4-3 DE, and even play some SILB with some development. Doesn’t have the motor/strength issues that Kindle has nor the injury issues that Ricky Sapp has.

Round 2: 47th Overall

Carlos Dunlap, DE/OLB, Florida
Dunlap has dropped due to some issues in his personal life and with his motor, making him much more attractive in the 2nd round. Dunlap could play the 5-technique for the Patriots after bulking up a bit, as well as being a conversion project to 3-4 OLB and 4-3 DE.

Round 2: 53rd Overall
Andre Roberts, WR, Citadel
Roberts is an incredibly talented receiver that is fearless going over the middle. He runs solid routes and has a very nice 2nd gear. Tom Brady will love this guy immediately, as he reminds us of Deion Branch at his best.

Round 4:
Tony Moeaki, TE, Iowa
Classic NFL TE with great in-line blocking skills and good receiving skills. Should go higher, but hasn’t been very durable at Iowa (wrist/head). We feel that he is the best TE in the draft for the Patriots when healthy. With Ben Watson and Chris Baker gone, Moeaki would be a great fit.

Round 6:
Syd’Quan Thompson, CB, California
With Leigh Bodden resigned, corner is less of a need. However, the nickel CB position is still a place that the Patriots can improve on. (Wilhite/Wheatley) Thompson is very physical, even with his small size, and has lots of experience in the slot. Can really lay a guy out in run support.

Round 6: (Compensatory)
Danny Batten, OLB, SDSU
Would be gunning to be a special-teams star in the mold of Larry Izzo, with the added benefit of developing into a rotational LB. Always a great guy to have around.

Round 7:
Mike Brandtner, P, Iowa State
While a punter might not be a sexy pick, they can be useful. Brandtner is great inside the 20 and kicks the ball well in directional situations.

Round 7:
Jameson Konz, ATH, Kent State
The Patriots hit big with an athlete from Kent State last year, Konz is a workout superstar that could develop into at least a special-teams demon.

Round 7: (Compensatory)
Dace Richardson, OG, Iowa
Lumbering big man that has solid technique and a good understanding of pro-blocking due to his time with Kirk Ferentz.

Round 7: (Compensatory)
Tim Hiller, QB, Western Michigan
Backup caliber quarterback with a decent arm. Good touch on deep balls and solid decision-making.

Round 7: (Compensatory)
Kerry Meier, ATH, Kansas
Meier is a former QB that can play FB/H-Back/WR and probably a few others. Just a good football player.

NFL Draft Homework: Las Vegas Bowl

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Oregon State vs BYU, December 22nd, 8:00pm, ESPN

Top NFL Draft Prospects for the Las Vegas Bowl:

1. Dennis Pitta, Senior TE, BYU (Pictured)
All-American TE that could also play H-Back in the NFL. Has the frame to be a solid inline-blocker as well as a pass-catching threat. Pitta should go in the 3rd or 4th round.

2. Sean Canfield, Senior QB, Oregon State
Prototypical QB size (6-4/220) along with solid feet and a good arm make Canfield a mid-round pick that could rise or fall depending on what team doctors think of his shoulder.

3. Max Hall, Senior QB, BYU

Hall’s intangibles make up for some of his physical deficiencies, such as his small build (6-1/200) and average arm. Great accuracy in short and intermediate routes might have a west-coast team take a 5th-7th rounder chance on him.

2011 NFL Mock Draft: Part 2

Monday, December 14th, 2009

17. New England Patriots (OAK)
Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina
The Patriots have had success letting talented players fall to them. This would certainly be in the “Vince Wilfork” area of great draft value.

18. San Diego Chargers
JJ Watt, DE, Wisconsin
Watt is exactly what the Chargers have been looking for the last few years. Great intanglibles, work ethic, and motor make Watt the pick.

19. New York Giants
Mike Pouncey, OL, Florida
The Giants love upgrading their lines through the draft. Mike Pouncey won’t last much longer, so they’ll have to grab him here or risk losing him to the Steelers.

20. Tampa Bay Bucs
Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
Da’Quan Bowers has fallen mightily, but the Buccaneers should be his floor. Building a defense with Gerald McCoy and Bowers up front is an easier task.

21. Kansas City Chiefs
Danny Watkins, OT, Baylor
Interior line help with some flexibility to play tackle if needed. Scott Pioli will love this guy.

22. Indianapolis Colts
Nate Solder, OT, Colorado
Peyton Manning wants linemen. Peyton Manning gets linemen. Solder is a bit raw, but could be a Pro-Bowl player by year two.

23. Philadelphia Eagles
Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
Jimmy Smith and Asante Samuel are a match made in heaven. The Philly reporters will love these guys together.

24. New Orleans Saints
Muhammad Wilkerson, DL, Temple
Mo Wilkerson has long been a favorite of Greg Williams in this draft process. The Saints need to address their front seven early.

25. Seattle Seahawks
Corey Liuget, DL, Illinois
Liuget is a tough guy to block in one-on-one situations. He is a much safer prospect than any QB available here.

26. Baltimore Ravens
Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa
Clayborn has taken a hit in the media’s eyes, but a smart GM like Ozzie Newsome will recognize the value here.

27. Atlanta Falcons
Cameron Heyward, DL, Ohio State
Cam Heyward would give the Falcons some pass rush opposite John Abraham. They’ll give Gabe Carimi a hard look as well.

28. New England Patriots
Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
I’m not sure that the Patriots will be making this pick, but if they do – Mark Ingram represents a safe play in lieu of trading down, turning the Patriots backfield into a true three-headed monster.

29. Chicago Bears
Marvin Austin, DL, North Carolina
With the release of Tommie Harris the Bears need a playmaker at the DL position. Marvin Austin has rehabilitated his image enough to be that guy.

30. New York Jets
Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA
While we honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see the Jets send a boatload of picks to grab a Top 5 talent again this year, if they stick here an edge rusher like Ayers makes a lot of sense.

31. Tennessee Titans (PIT Trade)
Andy Dalton, QB, TCU
If the Steelers can’t get Mike Pouncey, we see them trading out of the 1st round – allowing Tennessee to get their QB.

32. Green Bay Packers
Gabe Carimi, OL, Wisconsin
Bryan Bulaga was a great Big-10 value pick last year. Carimi will be no different.
