NFL Draft Homework: Sugar Bowl

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Cincinnati vs Florida, January 1st, 8:30pm, FOX/ESPN Radio

Top NFL Draft Prospects for the Sugar Bowl:

1. Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida (Pictured)
An absolute monster at 6-6/290 with the speed to get to the QB and strength to hold up against the run. Will play his best at right DE in a 4-3 — similar to Mario Williams and Julius Peppers in his unique skill-set. Should be a top 15 pick.

2. Mardy Gilyard, WR/KR, Cinci
Quick-twitch athlete that will try and replicate the success of Desean Jackson in the kicking and receiving game. An extremely productive player in college, Gilyard will be picked in the 2nd or 3rd round.

3. Tony Pike, QB, Cinci
The real QB to watch in this matchup, Pike’s prototypical size and arm will result in a 2nd-3rd round pick, probably ahead of some guy named Tebow.

4. Brandon Spikes, LB, Florida
Size and strength make the scouts swoon, but straight-line speed might keep Spikes out of the 1st round. Very instinctive player that can drop well in coverage.

West Virginia vs Florida State, January 1st, 1:00pm, CBS

Top NFL Draft Prospects for the Gator Bowl:

1. Noel Devine, RB, West Virginia(Pictured)
Devine may still in school until the 2011 NFL Draft, but he could be a 2nd-3rd round selection this year if he declares. Devine is a prototypical 3rd-down scat back that has great vision on screens and blazing speed.

2. Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State
A nagging ankle injury might dampen his draft stock a bit, but Robinson is a solid CB prospect that will go in the first three rounds. Robinson does nothing spectacular, but is decent in run support as well as coverage. Can improve his press coverage, but what college corner can’t.

3. Selvish Capers, OT, West Virginia
Right tackle prospect that will need to fill out a bit to play at the NFL level. (6-5/295) Good effort and durability will get him picked in the 3rd-5th rounds.

Penn State vs LSU, January 1st, 1:00pm, ABC

Top NFL Draft Prospects for the Capital One Bowl:

1. Brandon Lafell, WR, LSU(Pictured)
Big possession receiver a la Dwayne Bowe. Can stretch the field with his size (6-3/210) if not his speed (4.5), while his great hands give QB’s over the middle and on the sidelines. Will make a team very happy in the first round.

2. Navorro Bowman, LB, Penn State
Has had a few legal/personal issues that will bump him down to the 2nd round, but Bowman is a solid defender that can create havoc at the line of scrimmage. Not a huge pass-rusher, but can hold his own in the flats.

3. Chad Jones, FS, LSU
Big size (6-3/235) and quick feet make scouts drool, even though his body of work hasn’t been anything amazing. He shows tons of potential, and that is enough to warrant an early 3rd round grade.

2011 NFL Mock Draft

2011 NFL Mock Draft – Final Update: April 28th, 2011

1. Carolina Panthers
Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
Cam Newton gives the Panthers a chance to… have two overrated quarterbacks on the same team. What 2011 NFL Mock Draft is complete without a subtle dig at Newton?

2. Denver Broncos
Von Miller, DE, Texas A&M
The Broncos should pick Marcell Dareus, but it looks like they will choose the flashy Von Miller – who seems to be a sack artist more interested in his stats than playing good team defense. Many think that Miller will prove me wrong, but I just don’t see him being a special player in the NFL.

3. Buffalo Bills
Marcell Dareus, DE, Alabama
Marcell Dareus is exactly what the Bills need – another solid defensive lineman. He probably won’t win DROY, but he will make an impact on each down.

4. Cincinnati Bengals
AJ Green, WR, Georgia
If the Bengals finally make a good safe pick in the NFL Draft like AJ Green, I’m not sure what I will do.

5. Arizona Cardinals
Tyron Smith, OL, USC
Look for the Cardinals to surprise and take this USC dancing bear. Smith is easily the offensive lineman with the highest upside in the draft.

6. Cleveland Browns
Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
Julio Jones will provide a solid intermediate target for Colt McCoy to grow up with. Jones is perhaps the most physical WR in the 2011 NFL Draft.

7. San Francisco 49ers
Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
Patrick Peterson might be the best player in the draft – and would be an absolute steal here for the 49ers if this 2011 NFL Mock Draft is correct.

8. Tennessee Titans
Nick Fairley, DL, Auburn
Nick Fairley and the Titans are a match made in heaven. Tennessee got good years out of Albert Haynesworth of all people, so Fairley shouldn’t be a problem.

9. Dallas Cowboys
Cameron Jordan, DE, California
Cameron Jordan has the ability to play multiple positions in the Cowboys defense: tackle, end, and outside linebacker. That sort of versatility is hard to pass up if you are the Silver and Blue.

10. Washington Redskins
Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
While the Redskins might move up to grab Gabbert, we think #10 is about the right spot for him. Seems like a perfect Shanahan QB.

11. Houston Texans
Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska
Corner is the easy pick here for the Texans, as their 32nd rated pass defense was awful in 2010. Prince is easily the best defensive back on the board.

12. Minnesota Vikings
Jake Locker, QB, Washington
The Vikings might try and trade back a few picks, but they also might just grab their future quarterback early. Locker won’t know what to do with some legit receivers on his team.

13. Detroit Lions
Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College
The Lions need to upgrade their line to protect Matt Stafford. Castonzo can play there, as well as offering flexibility at both tackle positions and guard.

14. St. Louis Rams
Aldon Smith, DE/OLB, Missouri
Aldon Smith will be a beast in the NFL. St. Louis could use a dynamic pass-rusher, which is exactly what Smith brings to the table.

15. Miami Dolphins
Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas
Tall, Big-Armed QB with character concerns goes to the Dolphins. Haven’t we seen this before?

16. Jacksonville Jaguars
Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue
Ryan Kerrigan is exactly what the Jaguars need – a legitimate edge pass-rusher that just doesn’t quit.

Ohio State vs Oregon, January 1st, 4:30pm, ABC/ESPN Radio

Top NFL Draft Prospects for the Rose Bowl:

1. Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State(Pictured)
Another 3-4 DE or 4-3 left end prospect that makes teams salivate on account of his versatility. His big frame (6-6/290) could even add a few pounds. Likely a second round pick if he declares this year.

2. T.J. Ward, SS, Oregon
Under the radar safety that can really close on the ball. Hits well, but sometimes can get out of control. Lingering ankle issue might push him into the 2nd or 3rd round.

3. LeGarrette Blount, RB, Oregon
While there are some ovbious warts here, the fact remains that Blount runs with supreme power. A team willing to take a chance could pick up a gem in the middle rounds — even Maurice Clarett was a 3rd rounder. Bad example.

Northwestern vs Auburn, January 1st, 11:00am, ESPN

Top NFL Draft Prospects for the Outback Bowl:

1. Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern (Pictured)
Wootton is the model of versatility, being able to play in both the 3-4 and 4-3, inside and out. He is still on the mend from a bad knee injury, so the Wildcats used him sparingly. Look for Wootton to use the Outback Bowl to jumpstart his late 2nd round draft stock.

2. Ben Tate, RB, Auburn
Tate is a downhill runner ill-suited for a spread offense. His low center and good balance will serve him well in the NFL. Tate should be seleceted in the 3rd or 4th round.
