NFL Beatpaths: Week 6

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

The Broncos are rightly on top of the league with their big win over the Patriots. The Vikings rake 2nd, with the Giants way behind… due mainly to their lack of quality beatwins. Find more beatpath information at BeatPaths.com.

NFL Trade Deadline: Nnamdi Asomugha on The Block?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

With the NFL Trade Deadline looming (October 20th), one big name usually comes on the market, like Roy Williams in 2008. Often times the deal isn’t completed, but every once in a great while, a blockbuster happens.

The name being floated out there right now is the Raiders’ uber-cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha is the league’s top corner, but his Raider-style contract makes a trade prohibitive. While he only is making $4.5 million in salary this year, his contract calls for close to $16 million in bonuses before playing next year. He might be willing to play for free if its not in Oakland though. Kidding aside, all of this becomes moot if there is no CBA extension and 2010 becomes an uncapped year.

According to PatsCap.com, the Patriots are around $5 million under the cap, which would allow the Patriots to bring Asomugha in with only minor disruptions. Perhaps the Raiders would accept a couple of 2010 2nd Rounders or their 2011 1st Rounder in exchange, although they will probably hold out for a king’s ransom. On the other hand, this is Al Davis here.

Nnamdi would look good in the Flying Elvis…

“IN! COM! PLETE!” – Bronco Fans

Those words have rung in Tom Brady’s ears before, but never so loud as they did this Sunday. After clanging passes off the ground, Broncos, and the legs of would-be receivers, Brady looked quite upset with his pedestrian performance. As you’ll read below though, Brady is not alone treading this path.

The Patriots defense did a decent job of stopping the Broncos, holding them to 17 points in regulation. Once Dean Pees started to make some calls with some imagination, they firmed up and gave the Patriots a chance to win the game. While Brandon Meriweather had an average game, Jerod Mayo stepped it up by making two game-changing plays: stopping Brandon Marshall short on 3rd and 2 and stripping the ball from Knowshon Moreno. With the Patriots being shutout after halftime, the offense has to take the blame for this one.

As alluded to earlier, Tom Brady isn’t the first QB to transition this way back into the league after an injury. After seven games last year, one quarterback coming off an injury had racked up 8 TD’s, 9 INT’s, and a 3-4 record. All Peyton Manning did was go on to win the NFL MVP Award and lead Indianapolis to a 12-4 record.

Whether Tom can circle the wagons like Manning did remains to be seen, but he has the right mindset to do it.

NFL Power Rankings Week 6

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Check out the NFL Power Rankings Week 7!

The NFL Power Rankings Week 6 edition sports some odd teams at the top, with some perennial favorites trailing not too far behind.

The Elite: The Broncos and Bengals showed they belong this week with impressive wins over New England and Baltimore respectively, although the Saints, Giants and Colts have better bodies of work so far. Meanwhile, the Vikings beat up another weak sister.

1. New Orleans Saints
2. New York Giants
3. Indianapolis Colts
4. Denver Broncos
5. Minnesota Vikings
6. Cincinnati Bengals
7. Philadelphia Eagles
8. New York Jets

The Contenders: It is really bizarre for me to have the Bengals higher up than the Patriots. I will now walk in traffic.

9. New England Patriots
10. Atlanta Falcons
11. Baltimore Ravens
12. San Francisco 49ers
13. Pittsburgh Steelers
14. Chicago Bears
15. Miami Dolphins
16. Arizona Cardinals

The Wannabes: Seattle doesn’t suck when Matt Hasselbeck plays, and the Jaguars and Cowboys are definite wannabes. The Texans tried to play their way out of this division, but couldn’t quite do it.

17. Green Bay Packers
18. San Diego Chargers
19. Dallas Cowboys
20. Seattle Seahawks
21. Houston Texans
22. Jacksonville Jaguars
23. Washington Redskins
24. Detroit Lions

Al Davis and Friends:
The Bills might have lost the season with one kickoff fumble on opening night.

25. Cleveland Browns
26. Tennessee Titans
27. Buffalo Bills
28. Oakland Raiders
29. Kansas City Chiefs
30. Carolina Panthers
31. Tampa Bay Bucs
32. St. Louis Rams

Jerod Mayo Bucking to Play Broncos

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Jerod Mayo is leaving on a jet plane, which is good news for Patriots. We didn’t know when he would be back again.

Setting John Denver lyrics aside, as the Patriots prepare for the Broncos of Denver, Jerod Mayo would instantly help out the sideline-to-sideline defense against the rushing attack of Knowshon Moreno. Correll Buckhalter won’t play in the game, but the shifty star from Georgia will present his own problems.

Mayo, who reportedly sprained his MCL during the opener versus Buffalo, packed a knee brace along with his travel necessities on Friday. The Patriots upgraded his status to questionable, giving him a 50/50 chance of suiting up this Sunday.

50/50 would be music to the ears of Pats RB Fred Taylor, who may miss the rest of the season after ankle surgery. Adalius Thomas, Vince Wilfork, and Wes Welker also missed some practice time, but each is expected to play.
