NFL Trade Deadline: Nnamdi Asomugha on The Block?

With the NFL Trade Deadline looming (October 20th), one big name usually comes on the market, like Roy Williams in 2008. Often times the deal isn’t completed, but every once in a great while, a blockbuster happens.

The name being floated out there right now is the Raiders’ uber-cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha is the league’s top corner, but his Raider-style contract makes a trade prohibitive. While he only is making $4.5 million in salary this year, his contract calls for close to $16 million in bonuses before playing next year. He might be willing to play for free if its not in Oakland though. Kidding aside, all of this becomes moot if there is no CBA extension and 2010 becomes an uncapped year.

According to, the Patriots are around $5 million under the cap, which would allow the Patriots to bring Asomugha in with only minor disruptions. Perhaps the Raiders would accept a couple of 2010 2nd Rounders or their 2011 1st Rounder in exchange, although they will probably hold out for a king’s ransom. On the other hand, this is Al Davis here.

Nnamdi would look good in the Flying Elvis…
