Big Sey You Later

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

As I caught a glimpse of the television after finishing up my round of golf today, I couldn’t believe my eyes. One of the cornerstones of the Patriots defense, Richard Seymour, had been traded to the Raiders for a 2011 Draft Pick. The Patriots will also realize $3.3 million in cap relief, although Seymour will still count over $6.1 million against the cap.

Seymour’s departure seems to signal the advent of the 4-3 in New England. With Vince Wilfork and Ron Brace holding their own inside, the Patriots need some pass-rush specialists on the outside-not Seymour’s best trait. Jarvis Green and Derrick Burgess seem poised to jump into his position at this time.

According to Bill Belichick, Seymour “established himself as one of our premier players for nearly a decade. His presence has been felt as a force on the field, a respected man off it, and a multi-year champion.”

Vince Wilfork, Seymour’s defensive linemate, in response to the last weeks turmoil, stated “This is another change and we’re going to have to deal with it. I don’t care how you feel about it. You got to deal with it and move on.”

Patriots Trim Roster to 53

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

In a flurry of moves Saturday, the Patriots have made it under the league limit of 53 players on roster – releasing ten and trading one.

David Thomas has been traded to the Saints for a 7th Round draft pick in 2011. With the release of TE Alex Smith, this leaves three TE’s: Chris Baker, Ben Watson and Michael Matthews – acquired from the Giants for a future draft choice.

Shawn Crable, Chris Taylor, and George Bussey have been placed on injured reserve.

The Patriots released the following players:

OT Ryan O’Callaghan
DL Titus Adams
OL Wesley Britt
CB Herana-Daze Jones
LB Paris Lenon
CB Jamar Love
WR Terrence Nunn
DL Darryl Richard
TE Alex Smith
DB/WR Ray Ventrone

O’Callaghan should land with a team, presumably the Kansas City Chiefs. Nunn and Richards look like prime candidates for the Patriots practice squad.

Andrew Walter Released

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Either Bill Belichick has something up his sleeve before Sept. 14th’s game against the Buffalo Bills, or Julian Edelman might be a better quarterback than we thought.

With Andrew Walter’s release, the Patriots only have two NFL quarterbacks on their roster: Tom Brady and undrafted free agent Brian Hoyer.

Speculation abounds that the Patriots will trade and trade a tight-end and/or draft picks to the Eagles for AJ Feeley. Only Belichick knows for sure…
