NFL Division Power Rankings

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Glad You're Back Tom
After the NFL Draft is over and 90% of each team’s roster is set, it is time to start projecting how teams are going to perform during the 2009 NFL Season. While our individual team projections won’t be out for another month or so, this is how we have the eight different NFL Divisions stacking up. Each division has their combined record from 2008 listed.

1. AFC East (38-26)
All four teams have improved over the offseason. The Dolphins added more weapons on offense and defense, while the Bills added one very important weapon to their receiving corps. The Jets got much better on defense, and the Patriots happened to add some guy named Brady. Following a great 2008 season, the AFC East seems to still be on an upward trajectory.

2. AFC North (31-33)
With the Steelers retaining the majority of their Super Bowl caliber team and the Ravens continuing to develop Joe Flacco, the cream of the AFC North seems in good hands. The gains in this division will come from the lowly Browns, who get to bask in the glory that is Eric Mangini. We feel that the Browns are due for a rebound, and the Bengals can’t suck forever… can they?

3. NFC East (38-26)
No offense at all to the Eagles and Giants, your teams will be very formidable in 2009. We feel that this is the year that the Cowboys finally implode and that Jason Campbell can’t be feeling too wonderful about the way this offseason went. If either of the two megalomaniacal NFC East Owners’ teams overachieves, the NFC East might prove to be the toughest division of all.

4. AFC South (38-26)
We’re not feeling the Titans magic this year. The Colts will be just fine, but the Texans and Jaguars are huge question marks. Each team could have another disappointing season, or could surprise like Tennessee did in 2008.

5. NFC South (40-24)
How can the best division in 2008 (by record) be 5th next year? Jeff Garcia is gone and Jake Delhomme is still there. Byron Leftwich is not the answer for the Bucs. Matt Ryan and Drew Brees will continue to head up quality teams, but look for major regression from the Bucs and Panthers.

6. AFC West (23-41)

Color us odd, but we see the Raiders and Chiefs being somewhat respectable in 2009, maybe to the tune of 7-9. This might be a division where all teams finish at 8-8, especially if the San Diego Chargers continue to underperform.

7. NFC North (25-39)

Matt Stafford, Jay Cutler, Sage Rosenfels, and Aaron Rodgers. Full of promise, void of meaningful wins. We see that trend continuing.

8. NFC West (22-42)
These teams are not good. Arizona will prove to be a flash in the pan, while the 49ers, Seahawks, and Rams all were picking in the top 10 of the NFL Draft for a reason.

Patrick Chung > Chuck Norris

Patrick Chung is Better Than YouPhoto By Matthew West

Below are some Patrick Chung-isms, based loosely (entirely) on the whole Chuck Norris phenomenon. Some of these are our own creation, some are rehashed Norris fodder, and some are the work of the great posters at PatsFans.com. You can read even more by following this link.

Patrick Chung was drafted 34th in the draft… because that’s when he decided to enter it.

Patrick Chung’s side of the field is the homicide.

Patrick Chung did wind sprints at practice this morning. There were no survivors.

Patrick Chung added a “C” to his last name because he feels no need to insult your intelligence.

When confronted with Patrick Chung, white men can jump.

Nobody talks about Wang any more, only Patrick knows why.

Patrick Chung put the laughter in manslaughter.

Patrick Chung knows what state The Simspons live in: The state of fear.

Knock, knock. Who’s th.. (TACKLE)

After playing against Patrick Chung, TO gave a press conference to complain that the Bills were throwing the ball to him too much.

Brett Favre retired in anticipation of Patrick Chung coming to Foxborough.

Patrick Chung is classier than LaDanian Tomlinson.

The San Diego Chargers aren’t all on steroids, Chung merely sneezed while attending one of their games.

Patriots Talking to the Law?

Friday, May 8th, 2009

According to Jets CB Darrell Revis, the Patriots are once again talking to former Patriot, Chief, and Jet CB Ty Law. We here at NE Patriots Draft hope that it stays just like that: talk.

With the departures of Rodney Harrison, Deltha O’Neal, and Ellis Hobbs, the defensive secondary is in the midst of a serious youth movement. Jonathan Wilhite, Terrence Wheatley, Brandon Meriweather, Patrick Chung, Darius Butler, and James Sanders are all well under 30 years of age and should be looking at some serious playing time this year.

No matter how much Ty Law “thinks” that he has in his tank, let’s not trade getting the Patriot youngsters out on the field for another aged veteran that may be past his second prime.

Patriots to Appear in AFL Legacy Games

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

According to the Patriots organization, the throwback jerseys will be in full effect this year, as they will be used for a total of four games. The classic red and white jerseys and helmets featuring Pat the Patriot are a fan favorite, but many have voiced displeasure at the amount that they will be worn. “C’mon. One or two games is enough, it kind of cheapens the effect if they keep trotting them out there”, said Patriot fan Aaron C. While we love the jerseys, we tend to agree.

These are the games the Patriots will play in the “AFC Legacy” series:

09/14 vs. Bills
10/11 at Denver
10/18 vs. Titans
12/06 at Miami

Cold Peppers, Taylor Heats Up

Monday, May 4th, 2009

The Julius Pepper saga, which has hung around through the Jay Cutler debacle, March Madness, and the 2009 NFL Draft, might finally be losing whatever steam it had left. We don’t feel like he would be a good investment for the Patriots, and hopefully someone else pays him $50 million guaranteed. Read more from Vic Carucci after the jump…

That story continues to baffle me, and I know a lot of other people feel the same way. The fact Peppers has yet to sign that tender offer simply paralyzes the process for him to be traded anywhere, if that’s what the Panthers want to do. The Panthers keep saying he’ll remain with them, but nothing from Peppers or his agent indicates that that will be the case. Frankly, with the draft behind us, it’s hard to see what kind of deal could be made for him that would make sense all the way around. I supposed the Niners have to be a possibility because of their extra first for next year.

However the Jason Taylor saga, nearly as long and tiresome as Peppers’, seems to be drawing to a close. Phinsider is reporting that two teams, as well as the Dolphins, are currently negotiating with the former All Pro defensive end. No word if the Patriots are one of the two mystery teams involved, but if the price is right, Taylor would be a valuable addition to the new-look Patriot defense. Peter King, for one, thinks it will happen, as he detailed in his MMQB column, “I think Jason Taylor will be a Patriot, unless Miami steps up to offer some real money.”

Rookie Mini-Camp Roundup

Over the last couple of days, Patriot rookies have been learning the ins and outs of the Patriots system and trying to impress their new coaches at Rookie Mini-Camp. Since the public is not allowed to view the practices, we have to rely on the opinions of those able to view them.

Mike Reiss feels like WR/QB/AT Julian Edelman has made progress in his transition from QB, and likes the way Darius Butler looks. Read more here.

Andy Hart from PFW was impressed by Brian Hoyer’s accuracy, but was concerned with Ty McKenzie’s apparent knee injury. Hart also mentioned that the new coaches O’Brien are doing some good work. Read more here.

Pro Football Talk has a good writeup of what is going on at the Mini-Camp.
