According to the Boston Globe, the Patriots have traded for TE Alex Smith from the Tampa Bay Bucs. The Bucs will receive an 5th Round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. This marks another trade in the Patriots already busy offseason.
Smith is a good all-around option at TE. He is solid with his inline blocking and has proven that he can be a threat catching the ball, with 1200+ yards and 11 touchdowns during his four year stint in the sunshine state. I would assume that Chris Baker gets the nod in running situations with one TE.
With Benjamin Watson, David Thomas, and now Alex Smith all entering “contract” years, tight end should prove to be a pretty interesting position to battle. Chris Baker, the free-agent signee from the Jets, is signed through 2013.
The Chiefs, who are in need of a quality TE, might be interested in pursuing Watson or Thomas if the price were right.
