Ellis Hobbs Traded to Philadelphia

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The Patriots have traded veteran CB Ellis Hobbs to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Patriots will receive two 5th round picks (#137 and #141) as compensation.

While Hobbs has been OK as a starting corner, he struggles against taller receivers and in the red zone. With Leigh Bodden, Shawn Springs, Terrence Wheatley, Jonathan Wilhite, and the newly acquired Darius Butler in the fold, Bill Belichick obviously felt that Hobbs was expendable.

With the trade, the Patriots have cleared $2.2 million in Salary Cap space.

Reiss’ Pieces has some great reaction from the man himself: Ellis Hobbs called the trade “shocking”.

With the 97th Pick…

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The Patriots have selected Tyrone McKenzie, OLB, South Florida. McKenzie is a pretty good tackler that could improve his fluidity in space. The Patriots are probably looking at the USF product as an ILB prospect.

The 97th pick was received as compensation for the loss of CB Asante Samuel to the Eagles in free agency last year.

With the 89th Pick…

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The Patriots have traded the pick to the Tennessee Titans. The Patriots will receive the Titans 2nd round pick in 2010.

That makes three second round picks for the Patriots in the more talent rich 2010 draft. Bill Belichick is playing this draft like a flute.

With the 83rd Pick…

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The Patriots have selected Brandon Tate, WR, North Carolina. Brandon is recovering from an ACL/MCL Tear he suffered in October, and also reportedly failed a drug test. Mike Mayock states that Tate won’t play in 2009 due to his injury, but should be primed to compete in 2010.

PatriotsExaminer has more on the gamble that was the Brandon Tate pick.

Tate addresses our #3 priority on the day, which was to upgrade WR depth, so we give this pick a solid B+.

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The Patriots have traded the pick to Jacksonville for a 2010 2nd Round Pick and a 7th Rounder this year. (#232)

This fulfills our #1 Priority for Day 2 of the draft, so we give the deal an A+.

Patriots Draft: Day 2 Reset

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

After a productive Day 1 that saw the Patriots get much younger on the defensive side of the ball, Patriot fans are salivating looking at the four third round draft picks to start off Day 2.

The Patriots have the following draft picks on Sunady: 73, 83, 89, 97*, 170*, 207*, 234*. (*-compensatory picks can’t be traded)

One problem is that the Patriots would have a problem fitting 8 rookies onto their active roster, which is sitting pretty good already. Therefore, look for some packaging of picks to move up in the 2009 Draft, or to move some picks to 2010.

Here are the top four priorities that I feel the Patriots need to address on Day 2 of the NFL Draft.

1. Stock up for 2010 – The Patriots need to get an extra 2nd Rounder with one of their 3rd Round draft picks. I can’t imagine a Patriots draft without having additional picks somewhere.

2. Address DE/OLB – There are still many good 5-technique DE’s out there, and even a few conversion guys. Everette Pedescleaux and Jarron Gilbert head up the DE’s left, while the Patriots will have to search around for some OLB talent – Perhaps Julius Peppers? Nah…

3. Upgrade WR depth – Juaquin Iglesias, Johnny Knox, Mike Thomas, Brandon Tate and Louis Murphy are all receivers that could compete for a roster spot.

4. Number 3 QB – Rhett Bomar and Stephen McGee are both signal callers that would compete for the emergency QB spot. Good QB’s provide value later in their careers as well, a la Matt Cassel.
