Patriots Trade for Alex Smith

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

According to the Boston Globe, the Patriots have traded for TE Alex Smith from the Tampa Bay Bucs. The Bucs will receive an 5th Round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. This marks another trade in the Patriots already busy offseason.

Smith is a good all-around option at TE. He is solid with his inline blocking and has proven that he can be a threat catching the ball, with 1200+ yards and 11 touchdowns during his four year stint in the sunshine state. I would assume that Chris Baker gets the nod in running situations with one TE.

With Benjamin Watson, David Thomas, and now Alex Smith all entering “contract” years, tight end should prove to be a pretty interesting position to battle. Chris Baker, the free-agent signee from the Jets, is signed through 2013.

The Chiefs, who are in need of a quality TE, might be interested in pursuing Watson or Thomas if the price were right.

Patrick Chung Comes to New England

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

“Ready to go to work.”

Love to hear those words from Patrick Chung. During his first press conference with the Patriots, as he held up a beautiful throwback #1 jersey, Chung talked at length about working hard on the field and off the field. “You have to get your edge in the film room,” Chung said, according to Reiss’ Pieces editor Mike Reiss.

All he needs is a nickname…

Patrick Chung’s Other Sides

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

By now we’ve all probably seen video of the #34 pick in the draft, Patrick Chung, making an interception or two and delivering a big hit in run support. Here are a few things that you might not have seen so far.

Blocking: Watch Chung as he absolutely decimates one Michigan OT, yes I said OT, and effectively blocks another. Maybe he could play fullback too? More videos after the jump…

2010 NFL Mock Draft (17-32)

Monday, April 27th, 2009

17. San Francisco 49ers (CAR)
Earl Thomas, S/CB, Texas
After surprising everyone by declaring for the 2010 NFL Draft, Thomas is an absolute dream for the Niners here, although Taylor Mays will provide competition for the #2 safety position in some 2010 NFL Mock Drafts. We feel that Thomas is better than Berry in coverage, but is just behind in run support and ball skills.
Other options: WR, DE

18. Pittsburgh Steelers
Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee
Prototypical 3-4 Nose that can really clog things up in the middle. Doesn’t have the upside of a Terrence Cody, but also doesn’t have all the flaws.

19. Atlanta Falcons
Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
Will become Matt Ryan’s best friend in no time, as this superb athlete provides a big target that can throw a block or too as well.
Other options: WR, TE

20. Houston Texans
Ryan Matthews, RB, Fresno State
Surprisingly fast for a bruising runner, Matthews can get to the edge or pound it inside. Passing game is a bit of a challenge.
Other options: DL, CB

21. Cincinnati Bengals
Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma St.
The Steelers team needs some targets other than Mike Wallace now that Santonio Holmes has been traded. Bryant is an incredibly talented, if a bit immature, receiver.
Other options: TE, S

22. New England Patriots
Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas
Kindle is an enigmatic prospect that shows incredible talent at times. When his motor is running hot, Kindle applies relentless pressure to the quarterback, although he will need to improve in space.
Other options: WR, OL, TE

23. Green Bay Packers
Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers
Scouts have concerns about motivation, but nobody can question the tape. Great athleticism and functional strength, combined with solid technique. The Packers line has been just awful.
Other options: CB, DL

24. Philadelphia Eagles
Maurkice Pouncey, OL, Florida
Versatile lineman with great intangibles. Could play guard or center immediately.
Other options: RB, S

25. Baltimore Ravens
Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech
Incredible size and speed, but very sloppy in his routes. Great blocker as well. A little coaching will turn him into a solid WR prospect, and allow him to live up to the Megatron Jr. moniker.
Other options: CB, LB

26. Arizona Cardinals
Roger Saffold, OL, Indiana
The Cardinals want to get back to a power running game now that Kurt Warner isn’t around. Saffold is the guy to lead the transformation.
Other options: CB, TE, DL

27. Dallas Cowboys
Charles Brown, OT, USC
Good technique, but comes in a bit light for NFL standards. Won’t dominate like aWalter Jones, but will be a good LT for years to come.
Other options: NT, S

28. San Diego Chargers
Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama
Cody is an instant game-changer for the defensive line. Has some obvious conditioning issues, but will keep the linebackers clean to make plays. Planet Theory at its best.
Other options: OL, RB

29. New York Jets
Jared Odrick, DE, Penn State
The Jets need some DE help, and Odrick is a hard-worker. The PSU lineman can line up as a 5-technique or 3-technique, showing some versatility. Jared still gets after the QB while staying stout against the run.
Other options: DL, S

30. Minnesota Vikings
Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers
Great size, speed, and ball-skills. Shined at both the combine AND in post-season play. Threat to take it to the house each time he touches the ball.

31. Indianapolis Colts
Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland
Phyical specimen that has decent technique, but could improve by leaps and bounds. Shot up draft boards with his impressive combine.
Other options: S, OLB, DL

32. New Orleans Saints
Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri
Weatherspoon is a smart, strong, athletic OLB that will fit in well in the Saints 4-3 defense. Incredible intangibles and great leadership qualities make him even more attractive.
Other options: DE

Sunday, April 26th, 2009
