Patriots Rumored to Have Interest in Peppers

According to Vic Carucci of NFL.com the Patriots have began to show interest in signing pro bowl defensive end Julius Peppers. Peppers played for the Carolina Panthers in 2008, where he totaled 14.5 sacks, and is currently under the thumb of the franchise tag.

Carucci’s source states that the Patriots would likely give up the 34th pick in this years NFL Draft for the rights to sign Peppers. The Patriots obtained that pick last month from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for Matt Cassel.

Carucci and many other Patriot Fans have expressed doubt in whether Peppers would be able to make a smooth transition to 3-4 outside linebacker or the Patriots organization as a whole. He has yet to prove that he can drop into coverage and due to the fact that the franchise tag guarantees him $16+ million dollars, he is likely to want a large payday.

Those reservations aside, Peppers would bring a whole different level of athleticism to the Patriots pass-rush. Bill Belichick has come up with many innovative packages in the past; Peppers would just be another toy for the league’s most creative coach to exploit.

How would the Patriots pay for him? Ask Miguel at PatsCap.com for that one, I haven’t the foggiest.
