Patriots Rumored to Have Interest in Peppers

Monday, March 16th, 2009

According to Vic Carucci of NFL.com the Patriots have began to show interest in signing pro bowl defensive end Julius Peppers. Peppers played for the Carolina Panthers in 2008, where he totaled 14.5 sacks, and is currently under the thumb of the franchise tag.

Carucci’s source states that the Patriots would likely give up the 34th pick in this years NFL Draft for the rights to sign Peppers. The Patriots obtained that pick last month from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for Matt Cassel.

Carucci and many other Patriot Fans have expressed doubt in whether Peppers would be able to make a smooth transition to 3-4 outside linebacker or the Patriots organization as a whole. He has yet to prove that he can drop into coverage and due to the fact that the franchise tag guarantees him $16+ million dollars, he is likely to want a large payday.

Those reservations aside, Peppers would bring a whole different level of athleticism to the Patriots pass-rush. Bill Belichick has come up with many innovative packages in the past; Peppers would just be another toy for the league’s most creative coach to exploit.

How would the Patriots pay for him? Ask Miguel at PatsCap.com for that one, I haven’t the foggiest.

Patriots Sign Joey Galloway; Resign Wright

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Continuing their very active off-season which has seen multiple additions to each side of the ball, the Patriots signed free-agent WR Joey Galloway to a one-year contract. The former Tampa Bay veterand should provide competition with Greg Lewis for the #3 receiver and deep threat position.

Backup defensive tackle Mike Wright also resigned with the Patriots today, locking in with New England for 4 years and nearly $8 million dollars.

As the Patriots are about $5 million dollars under the cap at this point, the Patriots will be probably sit tight until draft day, unless they can restructure some contracts that is.

Patriots Sign Leigh Bodden

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

The Patriots inked free agent cornerback Leigh Bodden to a one-year deal on Tuesday, giving the former Brown and Lion his third home in three years. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but speculation abounds that the deal was for $750,000 or $2,250,000, depending on whether you listen to ESPN or not (People still do?). According to Bodden, he always wanted to play for the Patriots and is willing to take the one year deal to prove to them that he is worth a long-term contract.

Bodden had some amazing years in Cleveland, where he made the Pro Bowl. His time was less spectacular in Detroit (whose isn’t?), as he had but one interception on a team that had a total of four.

Bodden will join a defense that he is comfortable in, having played under Romeo Crennel in Cleveland. His zone-coverage skills should be an upgrade as either an outside CB or inside in the slot.

With the addition of Bodden and Springs to the current CB corps, all signs are pointing to the Patriots being set at cornerback this season, and being able to neglect that position during the draft.

Bill Belichick Knows You Would Read This

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

When the news that Terrell Owens had signed with the Buffalo Bills scrolled across my television on Saturday, I started laughing. Nearly every Patriot fan that read up on Shawn Springs, our new veteran CB, knows that Springs owns “Eldorado”.

Bill Belichick obviously knew that the Cowboys would release T.O, and that the Bills would end up signing him. In order to try and contain the impending Buffalo offensive juggernaut, Belichick signed Springs to a contract.

Bobby Fischer should have wore Bill Belichick pajamas.

Patriots Acquire Greg Lewis; Shawn Springs

Friday, March 6th, 2009

The wheeling and dealing continue in Foxboro, even though Scott Pioli is long gone. Today, the Patriots have sent a 2009 5th round draft pick to Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Greg Lewis and a 2010 undisclosed draft pick.

Lewis should vie for the 3rd wide receiver vacated by Jabar Gaffney who left for greener pastures in Denver. One of Lewis’ more memorable games came against the Patriots during the Super Bowl, as he caught a late TD that tightened the game.

Many fans may look at his paltry statistics in Philadelphia the last few years, but if you look at the time he had TO with him, things look a little better. It’s tough to be a #1 or a #2 when you aren’t that guy.

According to Reiss’ Pieces, Lewis’ contract is an absolute gem. He will not count over $1 million dollars against the cap in any of the three remaining years on his contract.

Shawn Springs also appears to be ready to sign, although the two sides are still working on a contract. The veteran corner played for the Washington Redskins in 2008.
