Patriots Hosting More Potential Draft Picks

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Ziggy Hood (DL, Missouri) and Eric Wood (OL, Louisville) are two of the latest potential draft picks to have been worked out by the New England Patriots. Much has been made of who the Patriots are bringing in and working out, but history shows that the Patriots have no qualms about picking players that they haven’t met with. Logan Mankins and many others weren’t pre-draft visit players, but last year Shawn Crable, Jerod Mayo, and Terrence Wheatley all were.

If there is one thing that Patriot fans can garner from the visitations is what positions that the Patriots are interested in. Bill Belichick and company have worked out about every position so far, but their interest has centered on the defensive side of the ball. Almost two thirds of their interviews, workouts, and visits have been for defensive prospects.

Current Prospects that have conducted or will conduct an official NFL Draft Visit:

QB Stephen McGee
WR Johnny Knox
RB Andre Brown
LB Connor Barwin
DE Lawrence Sidbury
DL Evander Hood
CB Tony Carter
CB Alphonso Smith
S Louis Delmas
S William Moore
S Patrick Chung

Safety First: Patriots Will Host Three

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

According to Mike Reiss, the Patriots will be hosting three safeties in the following days in order to assess their draft stock. Patrick Chung of Oregon, William Moore of Missouri, and Louis Delmas of Western Michigan all will take a pre-draft visit to Foxboro.

All three safeties are good hitters that can be an asset in run-supoort. On the other hand, draftniks have pointed out coverage concerns for each of them, especially Moore.

The Patriots seem to have their starters set at the safety position, with Brandon Meriweather and James Sanders slated to start. While Shawn Springs’ versatility provides good depth, any of the three safeties coming to New England would be an instant upgrade over the triumvirate of Antwain Spann, Ray Ventrone, and Matthew Slater.

Bill Belichick and Company have had quite a busy six weeks since the combine. For a full unofficial list of all the interviews, workouts, and visits, take a look at this great post from Seneschal2 at Pats Fans.

Connor Barwin Coming to Foxboro

Friday, March 27th, 2009

That’s right sports fans–Connor Barwin is being hosted by the Patriots next Monday. So now that we know he’s coming to Patriot Place, the question is, should he pack for a a day or just hire a moving van already. I’d opt for the latter.

According to Barwin’s agent Scott Smith, courtesy of Reiss Pieces, the Chiefs (surprise!) and the Patriots are the only teams to privately work out the Big East’s sack leader from 2008. Both teams have openings in their 3-4 defensive fronts and also have future uncertainty at the tight end position.

As its been mentioned once or twice before, Barwin’s versatility is going to shine most in a team with strong Belichick influence. Therefore, the Chiefs, Patriots, and Broncos are all teams that should have their eye on this Bearcat.

We’ve got Connor in our contact list from a previous interview, so we’ll try and get some reaction from him after his workout on Monday, so stay tuned.

Update: XAM Sports and Connor have again been very gracious and we’ll get a chance to talk to Connor on Tuesday. Look for a post Tuesday night.

Darius Butler = DB

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Head Coach Bill Belichick spent most of his time with the defensive backs at UCONN’s pro-day on Wednesday. As Belichick gazed upon the field, he couldn’t help but notice a certain defensive back that was playing above everyone else. Darius Butler, who has shot up draft boards after a fluid performance at the NFL combine, continued his rise in the workout at Storrs, CT.

Butler (5’10″-183lbs), isn’t a physical guy, but his 4.38 speed, 40″+ vertical, and incredibly loose hips make him a physical specimen. He can also play football a little bit. The Huskie corner wasn’t challenged much in 2008, having opponents give him the Deion treatment game after game.

Butler’s skillset and physical makeup make him ideal for off-coverage, which the Patriots often employ on the outside. He can struggle when you ask him to press bigger receivers, but with some of the Patriots recent acquisitions, bigger WR’s will have Springs and Bodden on them. Having a young corps of corners in Ellis Hobbs, Terrence Wheatley, Jonathan Wilhite, and Darius Butler would be an enviable position to be in.

Even with the Patriots addition of Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden to the fold this March, don’t be surprised to see this DB become the Patriots’ newest DB come this April’s draft.

Patriots Receive Three Compensatory Picks

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

The NFL announced the awarding of Compensatory Draft Picks today and the Patriots were the big winners, garnering three picks. Compensatory picks are awarded to those teams that lost more quality free agents than they gained.

The Patriots were awarded picks #97(3rd Rd), #170(5th Rd), and #207(6th Rd). Pick #97, received on account of the loss of Asante Samuel, is the top compensatory pick in the draft. The other picks were received as compensation for the loss of Donte Stallworth and Randall Gay, respectively. We projected earlier that the Patriots would receive a 3rd, 4th, and 6th, so we were definitely in the ballpark.

With the addition of #97 to its arsenal, the Patriots now have six picks in the top 100 at their disposal, and 12 picks total. If Bill Belichick continues his current trend, he will roll some of those picks into next year’s draft, but it is safe to say we will be seeing some exciting fresh faces in Foxboro this fall.

Compensatory picks have been very kind to the Patriots, with Tom Brady being landed with one at pick #199. Since compensatory picks can’t be traded, who would you pick with #97?

Somebody Lock Connor Barwin Up

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Can someone tell Connor Barwin to lay low for a couple weeks? Us Patriot fans would love to see him around at #34 or at least #23, and with each day that looks less and less likely. He is quickly shooting up draft charts again after his incredible pro day workout after bursting onto the scene with a great workout at the combine.

Barwin (DE/TE/LB, Cinci) reportedly ran a 4.47 time in Cinci, improving on his 4.6 forty yard dash time from the combine. He also put up 23 repetitions on the bench press, two more than in Indianapolis.

Other than improving on his already cemented status of “athletic freak of the draft”, Barwin had an incredible day on the field as well. He participated in all of the positional drills. Not just one. Not just two, but all the drills for all three of his potential positions. Add in the o-line drills to show his blocking prowess and you’ve got one tired Bearcat.

Now Connor, you of the size 13 ring, please stay home. Don’t do workouts, don’t do interviews. If you do, run slow and talk fast.
