Patriots vs. Bucs: Disaster

We are well aware that it was just a pre-season game, but dang that was ugly.

1. Defensive Backs — Fernando Bryant was able to play, but it didn’t matter, as the Bucs walked up and down the field on the Patriots Sunday night. The Patriots corners gave up underneath routes all night, and the duo of Brian Griese and Luke McCown took what they were given.

2. Hold the Mayo? — Jerod Mayo filled the hole pretty well against Tampa Bay, but wasn’t able to get off of blocks as well as he was against the Ravens. A couple of missed tackles and some questionable coverage made for a sub-par night for the Patriots first-rounder.

3. Special Players — As we didn’t kick off much, and Chris Hanson did a good job of directional kicking, Special Teams play was a bit of a wash. I will say that Stephen Gostkowski looked great, hitting a nice 53-yard field goal.

4. Patriots Backup Quarterbacks — Ugh.

I hope you are right. The Patriots just didn’t look crisp.

I don’t think the game was a disaster. As I watched game I got one thought in my head: They held back on defense. The defense was really static and basic. I think Coach Belichick was trying to show as little as possible.
